You Need A Budget! Stop Living Pay Check To Pay Check

stop living paycheck to paycheck

YNAB (You Need A Budget) has changed the way we budget forever! I used to keep our budget with just a pen and paper. Like so many people, we felt like we couldn’t quite get out of the regular rut of things living paycheck to paycheck. No matter what we did and how “careful” we thought we were, it always ended the same way. We were tiered of working so hard and not seeing the results we wanted.

My husband and I went through the Total Money Makeover by Dave Ramsey before we got married. That was so good for us! So we know ‘what’ to do to get where were going, but it was to ‘how’ we were struggling with. Budgets are SO important. It gives you the freedom to spend guilt free and stay accountable to your expenses and savings goals. Ben is a natural spender and I am a natural saver. So really, working together how hard can it be, right? Yeah, famous last words…

Just recently we sat down together to talk about our finances and how we can be smarter with hat Gods gives us. Luke 16:10 comes to mind when I think about good stewardship. “Whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much…” This applies to so much in life. Our finances is not something to push off to the back burner and just keep going down the road that keeps ending the same place. God has given you what you have and you NEED to be trusted with it.

After much research and trial and error, I had come across this program called YNAB. This is an online budgeting program. After only two weeks of using ynab, we were amazed at what a difference it had made already. This program has you budget to 0 every mounth, that just means you give every dollar a job. “Give every dollar a job. Tell your money where to go, in stead of wondering where it went.” – Dave Ramsey

Have you ever wanted a buffer in your account? Or live on last mounts income? Well It’s easy to see you money grow or “age” with YNAB

When every dollar has a job you don’t ever have to wounder if your bills are getting paid. The first thing you buy out of your budget is food. The second is utilities. Next is your mortgage/rent, fuel, insurance, emergency fund etc. I have a category for our accounts minimum balance so we don’t have to worry about going into that “by accident”.  If you have any left over to budget GREAT! now you can put that money for extra  savings or fun! The great thing is if you have fun money you don’t feel guilty spending it because you know the basic needs are being met. If you have any money leftover in a specific category you can see it ‘roll over’ to next month. Slowly your money will grow or “age” creating a buffer in your account.

Watch this video to get a better feel for ynab and how it works. It is so important to prioritize when you are budgeting. Remember, over time if you stick to your budget the best you can it will pay off! You will be less stressed about your money and you can see your goals become a reality.

Don’t let your money control your life. Take control of you money and tell it where to go. Talk with your husband and set goals together! It’s lots of fun have goals and work for them together. You can read more about goal setting here.

Changing the way we manage our money using Dave Ramsey’s 7 baby steps was amazing in it’s self. After we started using ynab as our budgeting program, it has just put all the pieces together. I understand everyone works differently, and you my be someone who prefers an old fashioned pen and paper budget. If that works for you go for it!

If you keep doing what you’re doing, then you’ll keep getting what you’re getting. Ynab is free for the first month. Try it and see for yourself, and see if this budget program is for you.

  1. Dave Ramsey is the best! I am so glad I was used to working with a budget before we got married and Brian is a saved so it was easy to transition. There is no way we would be where we are, almost some with his degree with zero debt, if it weren’t for the budget.
